Thrilled to read that people are looking into kids' TV. I was aghast at CBeebies when my child was little and I started taking notes - a tally on male characters vs females and it was worse than it even felt. And as for 'Grandpa in my Pocket'.. Oh my God it was basically Benny Hill for 6 years olds, all rolling eyes behind mother-in-law's back. I Tweeted them that the relentless misogyny was basically hate speech for Key Stage 1 and they weren't happy. They asked me to fill in some form but of course I got all 'not just your form; I'm going to take my years of notes and write An Article' and of course I got two paragraphs written before life got in the way. But it's my personal bugbear and now I want to go back and write the thing. Default Male everywhere. 'Oooh kids, look at the little woodlouse. Isn't it funny how he rolls himself into a ball?' NO. IT'S FUNNY THAT YOU CAN IDENTIFY ITS SEX. Or that those 4-year-olds are expected to assume sex doesn't matter, because the earwig is also 'wiggling his antennae'. But the line-up of PostMAN Pat, Rara the Noisy (male) Lion, Hey (male) Duggie, '(male) Timmy Time', Peter (male) Rabbit, Mr (male) Tumble aka (male) Justin with Robert the (male) Robot, (male) Andy and the Animals. It was endless - and nauseating, and I sat through hours of it with my daughter, more fool me, but I was tired and alone. But most of all it was scary to realise the youngest generation was being inculcated with messaging that I had naively assumed had been left behind. It was insanely hard work to battle it every day. 'Oh yes Harry, he is a lovely Tyrannosaurus Rex - is the other one his mummy?' 'Mummy dinosaur?? Hahahaha!!' I once had a conversation on Twitter about the sexism in children's clothing (because OH MY GOD) and someone pointed out that all the animals on boys' clothing were predators and on girls' it was prey and that was really chilling. My daughter's teddy was Belinda Bear but when the school teacher came for the home visit and asked 'he's lovely. What's his name?' she looked at me in panic and utter confusion at there having been no question about it not being a boy - just the innocence on that face of not understanding why the teacher would make that assumption and not managing to answer the question. And knowing that that innocence had to be shed and there was no choice and we're all powerless to fight this juggernaut that will go on forever. MY GOD THE RAGE!!!

I have a 9 year old who will not wear cold clothes- the solution is a quick blast with the hairdryer! Not the most environmentally friendly solution, but a trade off for better regulation of the nervous system...
