Thank you so much for putting together a lot of my eparse thoughts on the subject in this incisive maner, as usual I loved reading your newsletter.

I was surprised to read that you did not knew Fredereci before, but realized that in France we had the good fortune of Fredereci's research being popularized by the journalist Mona Chollet, who published a book on the wiches hunt and trials. She does rely heavily on Frederici research so if you read Caliban and the wich it will seem a little redundant, but she does a good job of summing things up, making them more accessible maybe, and also putting it into context with other, more recent works and researches, which she cites and that might interest you. Happily I found out she has been translated in English !

Funily enough, I found the English title was much better at reflecting the general conclusion of her and your essays, than the French title of her book, which would loosely translate as "Wiches, The untamed power of women". I still wonder about this one...

Have a great day !

I realized I misspelled Federici's name in my post, shame on me (and all my apologies to her)

This is a brand new perspective. When the ruling ideology is “make money at any cost” any changes have to be couched in terms of the economy. For what are we but human resources? So we sell our souls to the corporate system and get crushed by it. When I was nursing, one of my managers basically said “if you don’t like the heat, get out of the kitchen, there are plenty more who can fill your job”. Now the powers that be are panicking because there aren’t enough little foot soldiers to fill the gaps, failing to realise that young people today can’t afford to have children. Many of my sons’ generation don’t earn enough to even make rent, let alone buy a house, and who wants to have their entire salary taken up with rent/mortgage and nursery fees?

Great work, Caroline. Thank you.

Evidently I'm distantly related to two of the male children buried at that Durotriges site. Anyway. Carry on....

Part of the recent republican victory in the US came from the disenfranchisement of millions from democratic cities. The plans to continue and deepen that process are underway. One format is, in the name of "fraud at the polls" to insist that all voters be able to provide current ID that matches their birth certificates. Naturally that would leave out married women who changed their names to match their husband's, especially if they neglected to get court documentation of the switch. But then that is their plan, an interim step towards one vote per household, presumably the husband's.

Thank you for this. I’m still in shock this morning from the oval office s*show yesterday, but this felt empowering to me. Yes, frightening, as I realize this is another swing/roundabout, but also inspiring. Thank you for writing. Also, I’d love to connect you to SWHR.org, if you’re not already aware of them. ♥️

Wow! 6000 incisive words that get to the heart of the issue in a way I had never looked at it before! Thank you for this excellent instalment. I particularly like the comparison with environmentalism and must put both books on my TBR list (even though mine like yours is already too long). And thank you for the hyperlink - appreciated not just by your mum!

Brilliant thanks! I haven't read the Federici book, but Normal Women by Phillipa Gregory seems to cover some of it. What is striking from it it that patriarchy didn't just happen, it was built by conscious decision to take power away from women. I know you said you didn't want more tbr but I have recently read Propserity Without Growth by Tim Jackson and it was very interesting, basically talking about how to reshape the economy so people can prosper in a finite world. That infinite growth is neither possible, not desirable. Still not sure what I can do with this information yet 😬. Thanks for the tip on the Night Bitch. It's on my list 😁
