Invisible Women: Has Anyone Informed Jordan Peterson?

Well HELLO THERE, my dear GFPs! Happy almost International Women's Day! Happy International Women's MONTH! (ikr can you believe we get a whole MONTH now, does Jordan Peterson know??)The theme for this year’s IWD is, I am reliably informed, #BreaktheBias, and this is, in my humble opinion, preferable to last year's #ChoosetoChallenge which tbqh made me die a bit inside -- honestly who comes up with these? Is there a committee? Why are we not on it?? I demand a GFP representative!Anyway, I guess we're ok with Break the Bias as a theme because what, if not breaking the bias, is a GFP even FOR, although I'm not sure about how much impact crossing arms into an X (the recommended accompanying action) in an instagram post will have on the state of the data gap.Do I sound jaded? I suppose I am a bit. After a decade of seeing hashtag activism achieve little more than moral licensing I am all out of patience for words and poses that cost nothing and deliver as little. As Mariah Carey sang in an alternate universe, "All I Want For IWD Are Some Tangible Goals And The Detailed, Evidence-Based, And, Crucially, Well-Funded Plans To Realise Them" 🎶Instant number one right there -- someone get Mariah's agent on the phone 🥸Anyway, thankfully there ARE some women doing just that -- the lovely A[merican]B[eefcake] sent me this article the other day of TIME Magazine's 12 women of the year -- GFPs may recognise a certain Tracy Chou, not only from Invisible Women The Book p.110, but also from Invisible Women The Newsletter and Invisible Women The YouTube Channel, phew!In other #IWD-related news, my UK publisher has just got in touch to inform me that Invisible Women is on Kindle Deal throughout March at the OUTRAGEOUSLY low price of £1.99 AND that members of Audible UK can get the audiobook of Invisible Women (read by me!) for the ALSO OUTRAGEOUSLY low price of £1.99 ONLY ON International Women’s Day itself, ie TOMORROW, Tuesday 8th March. So if there's anyone left in your life who hasn't yet read it (and the tangible, evidence-based goals therein 😎) now is a pretty good time for them to invest in a copy 🙌

Helloooo GFPs! Thank you for all your lovely messages following last week's newsletter, as always, they are so appreciated. I'm so lucky to have you lovely lot as readers. Like, I'm biased, but I'm pretty sure you're the best newsletter subscriber list in the whole d*mn world 🥰Anyway, I'm rewarding you with a newsletter that will infuriate you, YOU'RE WELCOME xoxoxoOh, just one thing before we dive in! I have been trying, without success, to find the journal that announced a couple of years ago -- I think it might have been about a year after IW was published -- that it was going to require all submissions to have sex disaggregated data. It wasn't one of the huge hitters like the Lancet or BMJ or Nature or anything like that, it was a specific speciality journal.Does ANYONE remember what this journal was? Please help! 😍

My dear GFPs, apologies for not getting out a newsletter last week -- I'm sure I sound like a stuck record, but the difficult personal things I mentioned a few weeks ago are still ongoing and I just didn't get any good writing time last week. Hopefully the BANGER that is this week's newsletter will make up for it 😘

Invisible Women: should you speak to a stranger on a train?

My dear GFPs. I have to begin this edition with a HUGE thank you to the very very many of you who took the time to write to me and tell me about the ways Invisible Women changed your mind, or how you used it to change the minds of those around you, or, best of all, how it inspired you (as researchers, mums, dads, police officers, teachers, students, data analysts, aid workers, professors, doctors, engineers and so on and so on, my god you are a diverse and impressive bunch!) to take action. I was overwhelmed by the response -- partly by the sheer volume, but also the thoughtfulness, the kindness, the out-and-out amazingness of you all. Such an inspiring bunch of emails I felt so privileged to read, and such an inspiring group of readers I feel so lucky to have. For some personal reasons, this week has been really hard for me, and you were a bright spot in an otherwise gruelling and emotionally extremely difficult week. So, thank you. You are an inspiration to me to keep going. GFPs forever ❤️✊In other news, GFPs made the FT!...the bestselling non-fiction author and researcher Caroline Criado Perez shares her “righteous data rage” and pithy thoughts on the gender data gap with over 25,000 subscribers to her Invisible Women newsletter on the online platform Revue. Righteous data rage ftw!

Invisible Women: wilfully insisting on being female

Well hello there my dear GFPs!First up this week I have a little request for you. This past year I've taken a mental health break from thinking about my next book, but as we settle into 2022, I am finding myself thinking about it again. I won't lie: I'm nervous. The last time I was working directly on the book I suffered a breakdown. So I'm approaching it this time as if it were a skittish horse. Or as if I am a skittish horse. Maybe as if we both, I and the book, are skittish horses, liable to bolt at any sudden movement. So I'm approaching it sideways, never looking at it directly. I'm reaching out, very gently, very cautiously, hoping that if I move slowly enough, maybe The Book, because that's what it has become in my head, simply won't notice that I'm trying again. Maybe *I* won't even notice. And what I've found myself thinking about recently is change: changing minds, and making change happen. I've been fascinated by the idea of the former ever since I had my own mind changed so radically about feminism back in my mid-20s: what was it about that moment that made it possible for me to have my mind changed? How can I replicate that for other people (writing Invisible Women was part of my answer to that question, but of course it's not a full answer). As for the latter, well, that's what I've been in the business of doing for the past decade or so, and it's the question I'm asked most commonly by readers: how do we take action with the knowledge we now have? How do we make the changes we now know we need? And so, GFPs, here comes what I'm asking of you. What I'd like to know is: did reading Invisible Women change your mind? Or did it change the mind of someone you know? If so, I want to hear from you! (One woman told me her partner actually APOLOGISED to her after reading IW as he realised that he hadn't been pulling his weight in the unpaid care work department 😯)And as well as telling me if your mind was changed, I'd love to know, if you know yourself, how your mind was changed. What was it in the book that convinced you? Do you think there was anything unusual about your personal circumstances that made you more open to having your mind changed? For example did someone you trust give you Invisible Women as a present; were you in an environment where curiosity was rewarded (ie not on twitter 🤪)?For example, for me, I was at university as a mature student, I was THIRSTY for having my mind opened. The book I read was on my university reading list, so it came on good authority. And the example that sparked my lightbulb moment had personal resonance for me. After analysing my moment of having my mind changed I feel pretty sure I can narrow it down to those 3 key points. But what were yours? I'm really interested to hear the GFP community's experiences -- can't wait to see what you have to say!

Invisible Women: Gmail's delicate constitution

Hellooooo GFPs! And a special birthday hello to Invisible Women's unofficial patron saint: Simone de Beauvoir, whose birthday was yesterday. I opened Invisible Women with an epigraph from her masterpiece, The Second Sex...Representation of the world, like the world itself, is the work of men; they describe it from their own point of view, which they confuse with the absolute truth. -- Simone de Beauvoir...partly because it's perfect -- I mean LOOK AT IT it could not be more perfect -- but also to illustrate my immense debt to de Beauvoir. Her groundbreaking analysis of women as the relative Other to man's Absolute Subject provided the philosophical underpinning to my own work and without her there is no Invisible Women. So Happy Birthday, Simone, and thank you for helping us see through the bullshit ✊

Invisible Women: meanwhile the penis

My very dear GFPs, I am writing to you this week from the Isle of Skye, where the A[merican]B[eefcake] and I have been having a much-delayed honeymoon -- yes THAT'S HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU ALL. (The AB maybe loves you a tiny bit less 😘)But I wanted to thank you so much for your many lovely, kind responses to last week's newsletter -- I'm afraid you made this grown woman cry all over again. But it wasn't a howl of despair this time. I'm still scared, but I do feel less alone; it meant a lot to me to know that my speaking up has made so many of you feel less alone too -- and to be reminded of how beautiful and powerful the GFP community is. It is quite overwhelming to hear how much this newsletter has meant to so many of you. So: thank you, my lovely GFPs. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year and see you all next year. But first....
